Prayers for 2017
Of all the prayers for the new year, Thomas Merton (1915-1968) penned my favorite.
New Year’s Prayer
My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going.
I do not know the road ahead of me.
I cannot know for certain where it will end.
Nor do I really know myself,
and the fact that I think I am following your will
does not mean that I am actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please you
does in fact, please you.
And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing.
I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.
And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road,
though I may know nothing about it.
Therefore, I will trust you always,
though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death.
I will not fear, for you are ever with me,
and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.
In Isaiah 43, God promises to make a road in the wilderness to take us where we need to go.
May the following prayer help us let go of former things and focus on the new thing God wants to do for us, in us, and through us.
God, I confess that I’ve held resentment and bitterness against (name).
I acknowledge this as sin and ask you to forgive me.
I forgive (name). Father, I ask you to also forgive (name).
Help me, Lord, to love this person instead of clinging to bitterness.
Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
May God’s truth shine brightly on your path this year.
